Ubuntu-AI: AI for African Creatives

Ubuntu-AI: AI for African Creatives

Ubuntu-AI is a group of African, US, and UK researchers seeking to use AI to create more democratic and equitable futures. While AI can offer great value, allowing data to be collected for free can lead to exploitation. Africa's creative works—art, architecture, jewelry, and clothing—are poorly documented, and Ubuntu-AI provides an opportunity to ensure creators are fairly compensated while gaining exposure. The platform enables African creatives—artists, makers, and designers—to upload their work, with AI companies paying for access to this data. Ubuntu-AI also holds weekly lotteries to select a Creative of the Week, rewarding them with a cash prize and a spotlight feature. Links to the contributors' studios or websites are provided, increasing entrepreneurial opportunities for creators. The platform partners with African NGOs, artist collectives, and studios to manage invitations and contributions. Creatives can upload their work, provide AI prompts, and participate in discussions about how AI can bring together economic equity and democratic collaboration.
